Vodafone Portugal connects smart shipping containers to monitor cargo's movements across the country

Transinsular, the largest Portuguese maritime cargo transport company, is using a Smart Container solution on Vodafone’s network to manage the delivery of its goods.

The solution tracks the geographical location of Transinsular’s containers to ensure that cargo arrives at the final destination, while monitoring for any possible impacts or damage caused during transit.

Real-time location tracking

The solution – jointly developed by Sensefinity and hardware manufacturer HFA – comprises of a sensor which can report the exact location of a container at any time, as well as a GPS tracker and a battery with a seven-year lifespan, optimised to work on Vodafone's mobile network.

Furthermore, the solution also is equipped with an accelerometer that measures the vibrations of the container – this feature can alert customers over the cellular network to any incidents that occur during transit.

Vodafone Portugal has helped install the solution in 90% of Transinsular’s container fleet, which transports cargo by sea between mainland Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde.
