Why iSIMs are key to accelerating IoT connectivity

As the Internet of Things (IoT) expands, device manufacturers are always on the lookout for more innovative applications – with a watchful eye on faster, simpler and more cost-effective ways of bringing them to market.

The need to produce smaller, more powerful and efficient devices that require fewer components and a simpler supply chain is growing, and the iSIM is the latest connectivity innovation helping to meet that challenge.

What is an iSIM?

The iSIM, or integrated SIM, does the same job as a normal discrete SIM, controlling access to networks and with the same standards-based level of security. However, an iSIM is completely incorporated into the silicon design of a device’s cellular chipset, which makes it possible to manufacture smaller IoT devices, whereas an eSIM has as separate chip soldered onto the motherboard.

The benefits for product developers and manufacturers are considerable – especially when combined with low power wide area (LPWA) connectivity such as NB-IoT (for low-power applications with minimal data needs) and LTE-M (for applications requiring higher bandwidth, as well as supporting mobility and voice services).

Faster, simpler and longer lasting IoT deployments

  • By reducing the need for electrical components, the iSIM consumes less energy. This extends the lifespan of battery-powered devices (such as smart water meters, trackers and remote patient health monitors) which use LPWA technology.
  • The consolidation of chip components inherent to iSIM technology also cuts the cost of production materials and the device’s carbon footprint.
  • What’s more, since connectivity is embedded in the design of the product, manufacturers avoid having to manage large SIM inventories and the supply/logistics of an additional component, thus simplifying the process, and speeding up deployment.
  • And finally, by freeing up space, the iSIM makes it possible to make devices more compact – making new applications possible, such as smart labels.

iSIMs with Vodafone Business IoT’s LPWA connectivity

With more than 190 million IoT connections in over 180 countries and the largest global footprint for LPWA technology, Vodafone Business IoT is ideally placed to further accelerate global enterprise connectivity.

Thanks to our partnerships with leading chipset and module manufacturers, a variety of IoT iSIM modules now come with Vodafone Business IoT’s connectivity automatically included.

As the leading global provider, we can provide iSIM in more places – all managed within with our IoT connectivity platform.
