Patient waiting times down 32% at a Cairo-based university hospital.

Vodafone Business today announced that its digital solutions are benefitting 314 hospitals, serving more than six million people in Egypt.

Provided by Vodafone Egypt, which is part of Vodafone’s African subsidiary Vodacom, it represents one of the largest digital transformation projects in the Egyptian healthcare sector. Vodafone Egypt aims to help more than 26 million citizens, around 22% of the total population, through its digital healthcare solutions within the next few years.

Nationwide Digital Healthcare

With growing and ageing populations across many countries in which it operates, Vodafone Business is responding to the need for better access to digital healthcare services and trusted payment systems. Vodafone Egypt’s nationwide project is one such example. It consists of two major projects; support for the Egyptian parliament’s Universal Health Insurance (UHI) initiative to provide good-quality health services for all citizens, and digitalising Egyptian University Hospitals.

Universal Health Insurance (UHI)

Under the UHI project, 314 hospitals (up from 197 in 2023) now have digital solutions such as electronic health records and online payment systems rather than paper-based ones.

Hospital Information Systems (HIS) is a product that manages patients’ electronic medical records and healthcare institutions administrative and management processes. It is one of several integrated systems provided by Vodafone Egypt and its technology partners in support of UHI.

University Hospitals

The University Hospitals project, which launched in January 2022, will digitally transform a further 90 teaching hospitals with a total capacity of 27,000 beds across 13 universities nationwide.

Ain Shams University operates 12 teaching hospitals in Cairo and was the first such university to undergo digital transformation. Using HIS, one of Ain Shams University’s teaching hospitals has reduced average patient waiting times by 32% and cut the re-admission rates by nearly 63%. Its hospitals are now almost 100% paperless and have saved more than 50 million Egyptian pounds by converting to integrated digital services for many of its day-to-day processes.

Vodafone Egypt experts also offer technical training to hospital employees, including clinicians, management, IT and administrative staff. They guide them through the transition from traditional processes to modern digital services, and the associated benefits.

Frankfurt University Hospital

Vodafone Business has a strong track record in helping university hospitals make the transition to new technologies. The Frankfurt University Hospital, Germany, is receiving its own dedicated 5G network thanks to Vodafone Business with support from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) digital programme. This is an EU fund with a mandate to promote growth, jobs and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment in Europe. The dedicated 5G network will help connect doctors, nurses, patients and support staff in innovative and potentially lifesaving ways.
