Vodafone’s long-term targets to reduce its total global greenhouse gas emissions to ‘net zero’ by 2040 have been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). SBTi also re-validated Vodafone’s near-term targets to reduce the emissions from its own operations by 90% by 2030.
This means that Vodafone’s targets are in line with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement.
The SBTi commended Vodafone’s ambitious net-zero target, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process.
Joakim Reiter, Vodafone’s Chief External & Corporate Affairs Officer said: “This is an important external recognition of our targets to decarbonise our business. Validation from SBTi reaffirms the robustness of Vodafone’s ambition at a time when urgent climate action remains critical. We remain committed to ensuring that Vodafone and its services minimise their impact on the planet and realising the potential of digital connectivity to enable the economy-wide climate transition.”
By 2030, Vodafone will achieve net-zero emissions from its own activities and from energy it purchases and uses (Scope 1 and 2). By 2030, Vodafone will also halve carbon emissions from Scope 3 sources, including joint ventures, all supply chain purchases, the use of products it has sold and business travel.
By 2040, Vodafone will achieve net-zero emissions across its full value chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3), bringing forward by ten years Vodafone’s original 2050 ambition to reach net-zero across its full carbon footprint.
