Vodafone and 1&1 have launched a national roaming partnership in Germany, allowing 1&1 customers to access Vodafone’s 5G mobile network. This follows a deal reached between the two operators in 2023.
1&1 is the fourth largest mobile network operator in Germany, currently building up its 5G network infrastructure. Through the new and exclusive partnership with Vodafone, 1&1 can provide its customers with 5G network coverage in areas where its own network does not yet reach. For smartphone users, the switch between networks will happen automatically, and be imperceptible.
Marcel de Groot, CEO, Vodafone Germany said: “This partnership will enable us to optimally utilise our networks and further expand their reach for our customers, while helping us grow sustainably in the coming years.”
Ralph Dommermuth, CEO of 1&1 AG said: “We’re confident that our customers will benefit from this partnership. Vodafone has invested in network quality in recent years, delivering very good results, especially in expanding 5G coverage nationwide. At the same time, our primary focus remains on rapidly expanding the 1&1 mobile network, rolling out our innovative OpenRAN technology to more and more regions.”
The partnership between Vodafone and 1&1 is designed for the long term, and includes mechanisms that provide both companies with economic security in the event of rising costs and data volumes. It builds on an existing relationship, where Vodafone and 1&1 have worked together before as part of their MVNO agreement. Vodafone believes the tie-up will bring benefits to its own customers in Germany, through the better utilisation of its networks and greater investment.
