HERE Technologies, Porsche and Vodafone are trialling how 5G technology and highly precise location tracking can improve traffic safety and reduce the number of road accidents in the future.
The trial, taking place at Vodafone’s 5G Mobility Lab in Aldenhoven, sees the partners testing a real-time warning system which will immediately alert vehicles and their drivers to hazards on the road ahead.
The platform uses cameras and sensor systems powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and precise mapping technology to determine where a hazard is, even if it is not visible to the driver. This data is processed on the edge of the network through Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) sent to drivers in the form of an alert over a Vodafone 5G network, without delay.
In the future, new technologies such as this will be crucial in order to make roads safer for all.
Following the initial trial at the Aldenhoven Mobility Lab, HERE Technologies, Porsche and Vodafone have plans to undertake further tests with the potential for roll-out in everyday use.
